Day 6
Wednesday, June 11, 2003
The tour choir had their first rehearsal with Kenneth Fulton and the Iowa choir this morning. Dr. Fulton is from LSU, as are the four soloists for the Haydn mass. He's a very dynamic director and has a way of transforming these young choirs into something more than they thought they could be. By the end of rehearsal, there was a whole new and glorious sound coming from the rehearsal hall. Speaking of which, though the rehearsal hall is warm (like everywhere this week!), it's beautiful, with large mirrors and a crystal chandelier and gold trim everywhere. Perhaps the impressive surroundings also are inspiring the choirs to sing so beautifully!
After rehearsal we were free to break into chaperone groups and seek lunch on our own in Linz. Several groups ate at the Kaffee Glockenspiel in the main square of town. Others went for the comforting familiarity of the local McDonald's! And all had a nice time wandering through the shops in Linz, looking for that special souvenir or gift. Eventually we all wandered our way back to the hotel, where all but the seniors had a little "down time" before leaving for dinner. Tonight the girls ate at an open-air Italian restaurant where the pasta seemed to meet almost everyone's approval. Tarbell surprised the choir by buying each girl a rose from the restaurant vendor. What a guy!
The seniors left early for the traditional "Senior Night Out" with Mr. and Mrs. Wigal and Penny Tullock. They ate dinner out, then went to a local production of "The Sound of Music." They were really excited to see this classic musical set in Austria, while in Austria themselves! They had a really great time, but mostly because the direction of the musical was...let's say "creative." The songs were familiar (though sung in German, of course), but the choreography had them stifling laughs. Nuns dancing like a chorus line? Captain Von Trapp skipping off the stage? Sounds different!
The choirs have their first rehearsal with Dr. Fulton.
Lauren, Perrin, Mia, and Morgan seem pleased with their roses.
Tarbell looks lovely surrounded by flowers.
Cari, Jackie, Amanda, Alyson, and Krystle are ready to leave
for an evening out with Ms. Tullock and the Wigals.
